learning through the friendlies

Although I do not put a great deal in friendlies, they can be a good barometer to note changes. With yesterday’s loss 4-2 loss to Dortmund, the club showed some very good promise on the attacking end but unfortunately still suffered a few strategic lapses in defending. Pointed out by Sport Director Max Eberl who mentioned good ball position, the weakness is still attacking spirit, a lapse in transition and also not physical enough inside the box. Although Michael Bradley, Alexander Baumjohann and Rob Friend came close early, Dortmund took the lead a half hour in when Patrick Owomoyela’s cross was sent in by Alexander Frei from five metres. This was clear defending flaw and needs to be rectified for the re-start. Dortmund’s second goal was additionally off a defensive flaw resulting in Mohamed Zidan’s goal before the break. Tamás Hajnal expanded the margin after the break with Marko Marin bringing the match to 3-1 on the hour. Nuri Şahin and Alexander Baumjohann each scored late to score with the match ending 4-2.

Again, not to be overly examined, on the postive Tomáš Galásek had significant impact and his leadership was obvious in the direction of play. With Dante coming along with injury Borussia should be in good shape for Stuttgart on January 31.
