Gladbach’s fight

By: otto | February 2nd, 2009

Mistakes of the Hinrude are the past and Borussia has turned the corner and will not be such an easy opponent. The tactical plan of Hans Meyer was a masterful stroke that few expected, for those who appreciate the fine art of defending. Defensive tactics to rip the heart of the opponent out and if it hadn’t been for a unfortunate moment against Stuttgart the match would have ended in a stalemate.

VfB Mario Gómez comments after the match,”The last time I saw a system like that was 60 years ago”, referred to the work of Roel Brouwers and Steve Gohouri. The duo clung to Gómez and Ciprian Marica, tearing the heart of their attack.

He was correct and to do so, Hans Meyer called upon the legendary Karl Rappan’s “bolt”, later to be seen as “catenaccio.” Rarely seen but a tactical charm in shutting down attacking forces.

Yet for a brilliant plan to be implemented, it takes carriers of the mission and that fell in the able hands of Michael Bradley, Patrick Paauwe und Tomáš Galásek. Above all it was the great Czech Galásek, who controlled the midfield with iron, left no encounter unchallenged and lead by example.

“if it hadn’t been for a unfortunate moment against Schwaben the match would have ended in a stalemate.”

If it hadn’t been for Gladbach’s harmlessness up front they could have easily won it actually. Stuttgart were very insecure following the Bayern match. Too bad.

And grinding out draws won’t save Gladbach unfortunately.

Anyway, all our new Bundesliga team bloggers seem to have a soft spot for defensive football. Makes me wonder how you guys became fans of Bundesliga clubs in the first place. :-)

Great post Otto and I agree with Tomáš Galásek’s play. I had read some negative comments of him and nice to see someone defend the veteran. As far as your reference to Karl Rappan, I am not sure if there is a “post reference of the year” award but you have my vote now. It is nice to see a young player know the games history.

I’m pulling for Gladbach to survive but please for the sake of all, don’t make me sing : )

Jan, you should see your team of bloggers defend on the pitch too but I think a few will have something to say about attacking too.
